Name and Lineage
Khalid b. Jarir b. Yazid b. Jarir b. 'Abd Allah al-Bajali is the complete name of Khalid. Al-Kashshi has mentioned his name as Khalid b. Jarir al-Bajali and Khalid al-Bajali which brought doubts if they were two different persons. However, according to Muhammad Taqi Shushtari both names refer to one person only, and this way of referring to a person with different names is common in the works of al-Kashshi.
He also mentioned a person named as Khalid b. Yazid b. Jarir al-Bajali al-Kufi who was a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a). Some rijal scholars believe he was Khalid b. Jarir himself, while the name of his father is not mentioned in his lineage. Ayatullah Khu'i believed different titles meant different persons, as a result Khalid was different than Khalid b. Jarir who was probably his paternal uncle.
Birth and Demise
The exact date of birth and demise of Khalid b. Jarir is unknown. But it is definite that he was living in the 2nd/8th century. Jarir, his father was the man who deceived Abu Muslim Khurasani and stopped him from returning his hometown in order to send him to Mansur, the Abbasid caliph, as he planned to slay Abu Muslim.
Being a Companion and a Hadith Narrator
Khalid b. Jarir has narrated hadiths from Imam al-Sadiq (a), his brother, Ishaq b. Jarir and Abu l-Rabi' al-Shami. Hasan b. Mahbub who was a member of Ashab al-Ijma', was the most important person who has narrated hadiths from Khalid. The book of al-Bajali is available among the Twelver sources as Hasan b. Mahbub has narrated it; he has also narrated the about the book of Abu l-Rabi' al-Shami which was narrated by al-Bajali.
Reliability of Khalid
'Ali b. Hasan b. Faddal has mentioned Khalid b. Jarir as a righteous man. Because Faddal's reports about reliability of narrators are regarded authentic, Khalid b. Jarir is mentioned among the reliable hadith narrators.
Another reason in regarding Khalid b. Jarir as a Thiqa (reliable hadith narrator) is the fact that Hasan b. Mahbub has narrated hadiths from him. Because Mahbub is a member of Ashab al-Ijma', he should have narrated only from reliable hadith narrators. Then Khalid b. Jarir is accepted as a Thiqa (reliable hadith narrator) among rijal scholars.
Some rijal experts stated that, because Ja'far b. Bashir has narrated hadiths from Khalid b. Jarir, he is regarded as a Thiqa. Because Ja'far b. Bashir has narrated only from reliable hadith narrators; however, Ayatullah Khu'i did not accept this opinion.
Imam al-Sadiq (a) has approved religion and beliefs of Khalid b. Jarir al-Bajali. Mamaqani and Mazandarani al-Ha'iri mentioned this hadith and they regarded it as a reason of praising Khalid b. Jarir.
