Different Views Regarding the Meaning of "al-Sa'id"
There are different opinions about whether "al-sa'id" refers to "soil" or whatever grows from the earth; and consequently, there are different fatwas about the objects, on which "tayammum" is valid. In al-Mizan, Allama Tabataba'i says that most scholars of fiqh and exegetes of the Qur'an consider "al-sa'id" referring to the outer layer of the earth, whether it be soil, rock or anything on which tayammum is valid; however, some say that "al-sa'id" only means "clean and pure soil".
